Remind You of Anyone?

In the seventh Lectio in today’s (9/3/21) Divine Office of Matins, (Divino Afflatu version, available online at DivinumOfficium.com), for the Feast of Pope St. Pius X, there is this little gem from a homily of St. Augustine, discussing John 21:15-17:

“Those who have this purpose in feeding the flock of Christ, that they may have them as their own, and not as Christ’s, are convicted of loving themselves, and not Christ, from the desire either of boasting, or wielding power, or acquiring gain, and not from the love of obeying, serving and pleasing God.”

Call me irreverent or worse, but in reflection on this passage from Augustine, I just can’t shake the mental image of a certain former Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires. And so it goes.

Pope St. Pius X, Ora pro nobis!
